Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge (NWR)
Description
The trail starts at the canoe launch area, parallels the Nashua River for a distance, and turns back toward the railroad tracks, passing oxbows and beaver activity. The trail is narrow but interesting, with a variety of large trees. It eventually bends to the east and follows the path of the historic Union Turnpike toll road, built in 1805 to take travelers to Leominster. There’s a short spur trail leading to a bird blind in the marsh. The trail ends at the Tank Road trail, where a right turn will take you back to the parking area and a left turn will extend your walk by more than a mile (one way). Cross under Route 2 to join the Goddard Trail, which then leads to Mirror Lake.
Points of Interest
- Variety of wildlife habitats and migratory birds
- Nashua river access
